A home charger is a new 240-volt branch circuit, and most DFW cities treat it accordingly. Fort Worth requires an electrical permit to change, move, or repair electrical equipment, including services. Permits are issued to registered contractors with a valid State of Texas electrical contractor’s license. Cities differ in details, so we confirm your jurisdiction and pull the permit under our license.

Utility involvement depends on the scope. A charger added to an adequate existing service is generally handled between you, your electrician, and your city. If the job requires a larger service, it becomes an Oncor matter. Oncor’s guidelines state the company will not interconnect its distribution facilities with a customer’s electrical installation until it receives approval from the proper authority. Not currently, and it is worth being direct about that because plenty of pages imply otherwise. The federal Alternative Fuels Data Center’s listing for Oncor shows no incentives currently offered for residential infrastructure, the category home charging equipment sits in, and Oncor’s own residential efficiency program covers insulation and heating and cooling improvements rather than charging equipment. Texas has no state rebate for residential charger installation. The state’s EV program funds vehicle purchases, not charging hardware. Anyone offering to help you claim a charger rebate in this market should be asked to name it.

Sometimes, the load calculation is what tells you, rather than the panel’s appearance. The National Electrical Code requires charging equipment to be calculated at 7,200 volt-amperes or the equipment nameplate rating, whichever is greater. It treats it as a continuous load, so it is one of the largest additions a house can take. A 200-amp service in a newer DFW home often accommodates it. A 100-amp service, already running central air conditioning through a Texas summer, frequently cannot. Where capacity is short, a service upgrade or a load management device is a real option, and we price them side by side.

We would not recommend it, and code does not favor it. Charging equipment rated above 16 amps or 120 volts requires its own branch circuit under Article 625, which means it should not share a circuit with the dryer. A shared circuit also means the two loads compete, and a charger runs for hours rather than minutes.
